What to Look for When Choosing a Dog Walker or Pet Sitter in WNY

What actually separates a dependable dog walker from someone who just says they like dogs

Handing over a key, or even just your front door code, to someone you're trusting with your dog isn't a decision most people make lightly. With so many options out there, from apps to word of mouth to Facebook groups, it helps to know what actually separates a dependable dog walker from someone who just says they like dogs. Here's what I'd tell a friend who was looking.

Insurance isn't optional

Accidents happen even with the most careful walker, a slipped leash, a fall on an icy sidewalk, a reaction to something on a walk. A pet sitter who carries liability insurance is protecting both your pet and you if something goes wrong. It's a fair question to ask directly, and a trustworthy sitter will have no problem answering it.

A real meet and greet before anything is booked

Anyone willing to start walking your dog the same day you message them, with no introduction first, should raise a flag. A proper meet and greet lets your dog get comfortable with a new person's voice and presence before being left alone with them, and it gives you a chance to see how they actually interact with your pet rather than just taking their word for it.

Clear communication about your pet's routine

A good walker asks questions. Feeding schedule, medication, leash behavior, reactivity to other dogs, favorite routes, anything that affects how the visit should go. If someone doesn't ask much beyond "what time," that's often a sign they're treating it as a transaction rather than actually getting to know your pet.

Local knowledge of the area

Someone who knows the sidewalks, the busy intersections, which parks get icy first in the winter, and which neighborhoods don't have great lighting after dark is going to make smarter calls on your dog's behalf than someone just following GPS. This matters more in WNY than people expect, between lake-effect weather and the mix of walkable and not-so-walkable streets across Williamsville, Amherst, and Buffalo.

Consistency and reliability over flashy marketing

A polished app or a big national brand isn't automatically better than a local, insured, independent walker who actually shows up on time and texts you an update after every visit. Reviews and references matter more than how big the company is.
