Seasonal Dog Walking Tips for Western New York

Western New York weather changes fast, and a good walking routine adjusts with it. Here are a few tips I use throughout the year to keep dogs safe and comfortable on walks in Williamsville, Amherst, East Amherst, Getzville, Snyder, Buffalo, Tonawanda, Kenmore, and Cheektowaga.

Winter Walking Tips

Watch for Ice and Road Salt

Buffalo winters mean icy sidewalks and salted roads. Salt and de-icing chemicals can irritate paw pads, so I wipe paws down after every winter walk. On the iciest days we stick to routes with better traction and keep walks a little shorter.

Layer Up for Extra-Cold Days

Short-haired and small dogs feel the cold fast. On days with dangerous wind chill I recommend a warm coat and shorter, more frequent walks instead of one long outing.

Summer Walking Tips

Summers here can get hot and humid fast, especially on pavement. A few small changes keep dogs comfortable when temperatures climb.

Beat the Heat

I schedule summer walks for the morning or evening when it's cooler, and I always check the pavement with the back of my hand first, since hot asphalt can burn paw pads. Water breaks are part of every longer walk.

Watch for Ticks and Fleas

Warmer months bring ticks, especially in grassy or wooded areas around Amherst. I do a quick tick check after every walk and let owners know if I spot anything so they can follow up with their vet.
